About Us

The Riftcaller Games Team is a collective of creatives, bookworms, and tireless thinkers with a deep love for storytelling through the games-as-art movement and elegant world design. Our focus is on creating games with genuinely fun, immersive gameplay combined with creative visuals to transport the player to fantastic worlds.

LGBTQ+ Represent

Our team is composed of members of the LGBTQ+ community, so you can count on authentic representation within our projects through their writing, characters, and narrative.The sincerest hope is that by sharing the steps in our journey with others, we can inspire another group of Friends to become involved in just making games for games' sake.

Our Projects

We're currently working on two titles as time allows, with our focus shifting between either one as dayjob schedules allow. You can help us dedicate more time towards game development by supporting us on Patreon or Ko-fi.

Embers in the Dark

Riftcaller Games is a small LGBTQ+ indie game studio based out of the great Pacific Northwestern city of Portland, Oregon. We all met in different ways, but the one thing we all have in common is a passion for stories, world development, characters, and that feeling of becoming completely lost in a games' setting.We're self-taught hobbyists, bookworms, nerds, occasional professionals, and dreamers with direction. Together we want nothing more than to fan the flames of creativity and see what is formed in the embers: experiences, ideas, connection, the heart of the indie games-as-art movement.

Karina Weber

Project Manager / Lead Artist / Programmer

non-binary || they/them

Founder and Director of the Riftcaller Games studio, they are almost completely self-taught in both their creative and game design backgrounds. They're a hard worker and completely dedicated to seeing the projects they work on come to eventual fruition, starting this path in 2014 as a solo-dev.

Lena Sorgenfrei

Artist / Writer / Musician

non-binary || they/them

A New York native with a passion for storytelling and character design, Lena has been writing stories together with Karina since their meeting in middle-skool, and onwards to their present as partners. She draws inspiration from the works of Neil Gaiman, Will Eisner, and Jhonen Vasquez.. to name only a few.

Michael Slee

Programmer / Audio Mastering

grey-ace || he/any

Quite possibly a wizard, Michael is a loyal friend and avid gamer that is looking to get his feet into the gamedev industry. He's a highly skilled programmer and distills new information quickly, using it in making his scripts efficient and clean.. in as few lines of code as possible, of course.

Support Squad

These team members serve as freelance supports on a per-project basis, but the work they do is noteworthy nonetheless. Check out their socials for more examples of their work and personal projects!

What is KOH?

KOH is a 3D action/adventure game where you play as a young dragon on a quest to restore order to their world following the catalyst of an ancient prophecy. Join them on their journey as they run, jump, glide, and explore through distinctive and beautifully themed worlds, collecting treasures and thwarting baddies along the way.

Spread your Wings

The Dragon Tribes of today are the survivors of an ancient cataclysm that nearly destroyed the world, and gradually robbed Dragonkind of their True Magic. The Tribes have made due and banded together for an age, working hard to rebuild their societies once the miasma settled. Koh is a newly-fledged Scion of the Starseer Tribe, but all they could care for is sneaking away to test the limits of their wings!Fate would have it on such a day.. a Gnoll Horde from across the Shattered Sea descends on the peaceful summits and valleys of the Koh's home. They come wielding powerful magics that can imprison Dragons within Runes, thus separating the young fledgling from their kin.Sheer cliffs on one side and jeering Gnolls on the other, Koh must make a decision: be captured like the others or flee the only way they know how..

Gameplay Points

The gameplay itself is an honest love letter to the platformer classics of the 90's, with colorful levels, memorable characters, and an emphasis on exploration. All while making sure mechanics are finely tuned for a modern-age experience.

  • Responsive character controls

  • Learn new abilities, master your innate ones

  • Collectathon with varying difficulty

  • Intricate and complex levels to explore

Population 771

Driftwood Hollow is a slice-of-life JRPG with Visual Novel elements. It's about people and the isolated town they call home, their struggles, their children, their humanity, their demons, and the adventure of self. Meet our Residents and discover the mysteries of this sleepy, seaside town! Fall in love, feel heartbreak, make hard decisions, and witness their stories unfold.

Threads of Fate

Intended to be an episodic anthology series, the game is played from the perspective of various characters living in and around it’s namesake town. However, everything here is connected. Your choices and answers will affect the gameplay, the characters you interact with, and their fate going forward.

Gameplay

Following the lead of other much beloved story-driven RPG games, we aim to deliver a heartfelt slice-of-life adventure that can be played many times over.. and experienced path by path for different Ends. Here's the breakdown:

  • Lovingly created artwork

  • Different Acts and Twists available per Path

  • Multiple characters, one observer.. you

  • Well-written cast with their own histories

  • Branching storylines, multiple endings

  • Data persists into future Chapters

  • Point-and-Click minigames

Whence We Came

Written and developed jointly by Lena Sorgenfrei and Karina Weber, these stories were initially planned to be told in the form of a weekly web-comic or graphic novel.. but that met with some pretty big stumbling points. Thusly, we both decided that it could also be told in a more interactive way, where the player had an impact on how each story thread unfolded.
